Battery Charger / Rechargers Information

There are many different types of battery chargers on the market and it is often confusing to decide which is most suitable for your needs:

Intelligent Charger

The latest in consumer battery recharger technology, the intelligent battery charger is the easiest way of recharging your batteries. The key to their simplicity is a micro processor which detects when the battery is fully charged. The micro processor continually monitors the status of the battery until such a time it decides no more charge is required and then finishes the cycle by switching to trickle charge. When in trickle charge mode the battery is kept topped up until it is required giving the user maximum benefit of the batteries capacity. This charging method is known as minus delta V i.e. change in voltage detection. Modern intelligent chargers apply this monitoring to each individual battery chamber within the charger allowing any type of battery of any size which the charger supports to be charged at one time. It is important to check which type of batteries are supported as if you try and charge the incorrect type then it can leak and cause damage to the batteries and the charger. Given the continuous monitoring of the battery's condition most intelligent chargers are very fast at fully charging NiMH batteries. The latest models can charge even the highest capacity NiMH batteries anywhere between 0.5 and 3 hours. The charging time can be calculated by the following formulae: -

Intelligent chargers which take NiCad type batteries often have a discharge function. One property of NiCad batteries is known as memory effect (click here for more information). For this reason a discharge function is often available, however some models detect is the battery needs discharging and automaticlly carr out the process before switching to the charging cycle. Although NiMH batteries are said to have no 'memory effect' manufacturers still recommend that the battery is fully discharged before recharging.

Fast Charger

The name is more misleading than impressive and is a legacy from the days when they were 'relatively' fast. Typically they range in time between 5 and 12 hours, however it is worth noting that these times are associated with the batteries which were manufactuered around the same time. Typically an example would be a 1500mAh NiMH AA battery charged in 5 - 8 hours.

A very important characteristic of the older style recharger is the timer cycle. As the equipment was unable to monitor when the battery was fully charged they used a timer to switch off the current. Given the maximum capacity of an AA was typically 1500mAh, if you were to put a higher capacity battery in it would stop charging at a certain point and therefore not administer the necessary charge over the required time. This effectively renders the extra capacity useless. One method of getting round this problem is to charge the batteries over two complete cycles, however this is both time consuming and more prone to error than using an intelligent charger but does offer a cost effective solution.

Another feature of most of these chargers is a switch to select the type of battery most commonly NiCad and NiMH. If the wrong selection is made then the battery will be charged using the wrong cycle and possibly damage the batteries. Another difference between an intelligent charger and a fast charger is that you should always charge same batteries i.e. do not mix and match as the chambres are not treated individually but as a whole.

Standard Charger

These are the no frills simple chargers which have been around for some time. Often only charge one type of battery i.e. NiCad or NiMH. They can either be of desktop or wall mounted type. They are normally used for lower capacity batteries and often need to be left charging overnight or longer to complete the cycle. As you would expect from the oldest technology charger, these are the cheapeast to buy. The more batteries you are charging the more time you will have to leave them in.

Hints & Tips:

After you have purchased a charger, read the instructions as these can often help maximize the power of the batteries.
If you are using top of the range NiMH rechargeable batteries, dont skimp on the charger as you will not fully utilize the capactiy.
If the charger switches to trikle charge then leave the batteries in until you are ready to use them as this will keep them topped up.
If your charger has a discharge function, remember to use it before charging - especially NiCad.
Don't over charge batteries as they can degrade quicker.
Rechargeable batteries do not last forever, they have a finite number of recharge cycles.
Check the you are using the correct function for the type of batteries you are charging.
If taking your recharger abroad make sure the input voltage is the same.
Never charge different types of batteries together unless the charger can specifically handle this.
